Dr. Steven Maitland was once a boyfriend of Julie Parrish as they worked their way towards school. Eventually, she left him to pursue a career.
The next time they saw each other, Dr. Maitland was working on the Mothership, assisting Visitor scientists develop viruses to use against the Resistance and humanity as a whole. However, Maitland was with the Resistance and was stalling the whole project until he could destroy the active viruses from the homeworld.
At one time, Mike Donovan and Julie came on board to search for a list marking all the Fifth Columnists and Resistance leaders, and gave him the opportunity to destroy the viruses and escape the Mothership.
